Mindfulness is a skill that can be learned and applied to challenging situations as well as a means to promote an improvement in baseline functioning. Conditioned patterns that cause problems can be reduced when a person becomes more aware in the present moment as certain attitudinal qualities are cultivated during practice. Mindfulness training can help increase self-awareness and emotional intelligence, improve relationships, promote acceptance, cope with stress and pain, improve attention, reduce mental health symptoms, improve physical health, and result in greater life satisfaction.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. CBT works by helping people change their ways of thinking which influences changes in behavior and emotions.
Motivational Interviewing is an approach that helps facilitate and engage intrinsic motivation within people in order to change behavior. It is a goal-oriented, client-centered counseling style that encourages people to explore and resolve ambivalence. A person’s stage of change is honored while increasing motivation, readiness, and confidence for change.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.
Nurtured Heart Approach
The Nurtured Heart Approach is a set of social emotional strategies that builds richer relationships. It inspires appropriate behaviors by energizing children when things are “going right” while clear limits are set.
Life Coaching and Professional Consultation
Life Coaching and Professional Consultation sessions are solution focused and based on specific client generated goals. Life Coaching and Professional Consultation involves an initial assessment that identifies aspects such as stage of change, readiness for change, motivation, strengths and resources, growth areas and barriers, and concrete objectives. Professional Consultation may also include an assessment of a work site. Common focus areas include being a more effective caregiver, project and event planning, conflict resolution, increasing productivity, improving relationships, or increasing personal/job satisfaction.
Telehealth or Distant Counseling
Telehealth, a service I have been providing since 2011, uses technology to provide mental health services from a distance without having to meet in-person in an office. Telehealth has increasingly become a valuable option for many people for a variety of reasons. Pros and cons of telehealth can be found on the Telehealth Informed Consent form that is required before starting. There are a variety of technologies that make this safe, confidential, and affordable.
The majority of states (including Missouri) have passed telehealth “Parity Laws” that require private insurers to cover remote sessions similar to in-person sessions. If you are concerned about coverage we can discuss financials. I am in-network for most commercial insurances and EAPs in the mid-Missouri area, however I do practice in the whole state of Missouri and some places outside of the United States. Video chatting is preferred rather than just a voice call and in some cases the only option. **UPDATE** Due to conditions created by the coronavirus (COVID-19), most 3rd party payers are covering telehealth and may even waive cost shares. Also, some states are allowing providers to practice in places in which they do not have a license so I may be able to practice in your state if you live outside of Missouri.
Google Meet is used for video chatting unless your insurance or 3rd party payer prefers a different platform. Google Meet is a secure service that is free to you, uses little resources, and is quick and easy to use. From a PC or laptop you can simply join using your browser. You may need to download the app and sign into a Google account if you are using a mobile device. Please download and test the app well before your first time using it for our sessions. If a different platform is needed we will discuss the details.
