Common Approaches
EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. EMDR is based on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model which focusses on a person’s natural ability for self-correction when using adaptive resources. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of counseling that once took years to make a difference.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. CBT is a type of talk therapy that helps individuals manage their mental health and emotional challenges by learning techniques for identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors.
Holistic Approach
A holistic approach recognizes the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, physical, and often spiritual well-being. It emphasizes root causes and underlying systemic issues rather than just treating symptoms. This approach promotes overall wellness by integrating eclectic practices to empower a person’s journey toward healing and self-discovery. Focus may involve past experiences, cultural factors, multigenerational relationships, beliefs, inner wisdom, strengths, values, and personal choices. In addition to traditional talk therapy which primarily uses verbal communication and cognitive strategies, a holistic approach may also include mind-body and somatic approaches that recognizes the body’s role in processing emotions, habitual stress, and trauma. Engaging the body directly through awareness of sensations and movements is sometimes referred to as a “bottom-up” approach.
Life Coaching and Professional Consultation
Life Coaching and Professional Consultation sessions are solution focused and based on specific client generated goals. Life Coaching and Professional Consultation involves an initial assessment that identifies aspects such as stage of change, readiness for change, motivation, strengths and resources, growth areas and barriers, and concrete objectives. Professional Consultation may also include an assessment of a work site. Common focus areas include being a more effective professional caregiver, project and event planning, conflict resolution, increasing productivity, improving relationships, or increasing personal/job satisfaction.
Mindfulness Training
Mindfulness is a skill that can be learned and applied to challenging situations as well as a means to promote an improvement in baseline wellbeing. Conditioned patterns that cause problems can be more easily reconditioned when a person becomes more aware in the present moment as certain attitudinal qualities are cultivated. Mindfulness practice can help increase self-awareness and emotional intelligence, improve relationships, promote acceptance, cope with stress and pain, improve attention, reduce mental health symptoms, improve physical health, and result in greater life satisfaction.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is a harm reduction approach that helps facilitate and engage intrinsic motivation within people in order to change problematic, habitual behavior. It is a goal-oriented, client-centered counseling style that encourages people to explore and resolve ambivalence. A person’s stage in the process of change is honored while increasing motivation, readiness, and confidence for change.
Nurtured Heart Approach
The Nurtured Heart Approach is a parenting strategy that shifts focus from correcting negative behaviors to energizing and celebrating positive ones. It includes a set of social emotional strategies that builds richer relationships and inspires appropriate behaviors by energizing children when things are “going right” while clear limits and expectations are set.
